Engineering construction update: Sep. 26, 2024

Here is information about engineering campus construction activities that may affect you in the coming week.

Important

  • Use designated routes to travel through the engineering campus, and obey posted speed limits.
  • Use designated crosswalks to cross streets, and please refrain from climbing over barriers.
  • Keep your eyes up. Be aware of construction (and related) vehicles entering and exiting locations across the engineering campus.
  • Please avoid all fenced areas.
  • Please avoid construction trailers adjacent to the UW Athletics facilities.
  • Accessible parking stalls now are located in Lot 14 adjacent to Engineering Hall.
  • Plan ahead, and please be patient and tolerant.

New info: Changes and closures anticipated in the week ahead

  • Beginning the week of Sept. 30, Engineering Drive will experience an extended temporary realignment. Preparation for this realignment is ongoing, particularly Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Use extreme caution when navigating this area. We expect Engineering Drive to remain open for the entire project; however, you may experience temporary slowdowns or stops for periodic work.
  • Semi deliveries can no longer be accepted at College of Engineering loading docks. These deliveries must be routed to MDS in Verona for delivery to the college.

Ongoing

  • Through late October, the left turn from Randall Avenue onto Engineering Drive will be closed. UW Transportation Services has emailed Lot 17 permit holders with details and a map. You can also find this map on the College of Engineering facilities project updates page.
  • The short drive alongside the Engineering Research Building from Engineering Drive to the Materials Science and Engineering Building is now closed to everyone except construction and fire/rescue personnel and vehicles. Please obey contractor signs and avoid using this route.
  • To access the Engineering Research Building, use the main floor connector hallway from the Mechanical Engineering Building, the elevated walkway from the Materials Science and Engineering Building, or the accessible ramp on the Engineering Mall side of the building. This ramp is accessible via the sidewalk from 1410 Engineering Drive through Engineering Mall to the Engineering Research Building. Please be mindful of construction traffic when using this route.
  • A new temporary path runs across Engineering Drive for access to the ramp leading into the Engineering Mall entrance of 1410 Engineering Drive.

For future planning or awareness

  • Utility work on Randall Avenue will begin in the coming weeks and could affect the traffic pattern on Randall Avenue.

Please be careful and aware: Whether you are on foot, bike, scooter, moped, in a vehicle, or otherwise, be alert and know what’s happening around you. If you see an immediate safety concern, please reach out to Pete Nemmetz, our assistant dean for facilities, right away, at pnemmetz@wisc.edu.

As always, many factors, including weather and other unknowns, may impact construction activities. If our contractors need to make unanticipated changes, I ask that you respect their instructions, and be patient with them and others.

Once again, our goal is to keep you informed about what’s happening for your safety and route-planning purposes.
